Altadena Anthology
Altadena was opened as a subdivision in late 1887 by John and Fred Woodbury from Marshalltown, Iowa. The Woodburys envisioned a millionaires’ rural suburb north of busy Pasadena, hoping to add to the wealthy class already gathering here, including Col. Charles Greene and Andrew McNally. Their timing was off, the real estate bubble burst in 1888, and the region was thrown into an economic panic that grew worse as it merged into a great national depression lasting through much of the 1890s. A bright spot in this period was the development of Thaddeus Lowe’s elegant mountain railway, which created a connection from Los Angeles though Pasadena and up to Altadena and beyond, to the many hotels and camps in the mountains. There, temperance was not an issue.

Golden Poppy Celebration – May 21st, 2017

More than 130 people gathered at the distinctive Green Man Lodge on May 21 for Altadena Heritage’s 13th annual Golden Poppy Spring Garden Celebration and Awards. Steve Pribyl provided shimmering live music on his uilleann pipes, an Irish folk woodwind related to bagpipes. The usual abundance of food came with wine and bubbly supplied by board member Gail Casburn of the Altadena Ale & Wine House, and beer donated by member Mark Jilg of the Craftsman Brewing Company.

The AHA! Program

The AHA! Program

From time to time someone nominates, and our board designates, an Altadena Heritage Area or AHA! An AHA can be a street, a neighborhood or a place that stands out for one reason or another and has fostered its own community.

It all started because Los Angeles is the only major county in California without a historic preservation ordinance, and we are always looking for a way to recognize and raise awareness of the wealth of interesting historic homes and neighborhoods in our town.

Golden Poppy Awards and Garden Party

Golden Poppy Awards and Garden Party

Altadena Heritage has held garden parties ever since its inception in 1988. In 2004, the Golden Poppy Awards were added to the annual Spring/Summer garden party event. These awards recognize gardens that “present to the street,” enhancing the community for everyone.

AHAD: Altadena Heritage Architecture Database

AHAD: Altadena Heritage Architecture Database

Altadena Heritage was founded in the early 1980s, when many beautiful old homes and mansions were being demolished and replaced with tract developments, placing our community’s architectural heritage in peril. Members at the time did a comprehensive survey of the existing pre-war homes, and conducted research on builders and architects.
