Altadenans! Come together to celebrate our nation’s 250th Birthday at Owen Brown’s gravesite on July 4th. Join the program highlighting Altadena’s history as the home of Owen and Jason Brown, members of the famous 19th Century family who fought to end slavery in the run up to the Civil War. Abolitionist history enthusiasts from across the county will join the livestream from Little Round Top in Altadena’s foothills.

The “Declaration of Liberty,” written by John and Owen Brown for July 4, 1859 will anchor the program. The Owen Brown Gravesite Committee has gathered Brown family descendants, and representatives from community partners Altadena Heritage, Chamber of Commerce, Pasadena Unified School District, and Pasadena Civil War Roundtable to read salient excerpts from the “Declaration.” Ahead of its time, it called not only for ending slavery, but also for universal rights for all, including women.

There will be live music and light refreshments at the gravesite ceremony.

There are two ways to join the celebration:

•  Livestream – join 9:30 to 10:30 am on July 4th. Register

•  In person – meet at 9 am at the top of El Prieto Road for the short hike up to the gravesite. Space is limitedRegister
